The Harsh Reality

In the past 10 years, the SPCA has helped over 2,000 abused animals. Many of them were abused by people who knew them prior, some of whom were even owners or persons in charge.

The main reasons for these tragedies are # :

  • Domestic violence against pets of family members
  • Neighbourhood disputes arising from the animal behaviours
  • Abandonment of animals without food and water by persons in financial difficulties (often compounded by relationship and family problems)

Cases involving animal abuse #:

  • The largest category reported and investigated included 118 cases of active maltreatment(traumatic physical injury) to animals.
  • The next largest category reported and investigated included 102 cases involving passive neglect or ignorance (including malnourishment and abandonment)
# Source: The SPCA and the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong published a study whereby they analysed 335 cases from the SPCA database from 2013-2019.
